Feature Package on Yard Restoration
(shot with one 50mm lens)
At this home, yard maintenance is more than a chore – it’s a way to reclaim the past. As the new residents clear the blanket of vines and dead trees that cover their property, they make new discoveries that teach them about the man who built the house 70 years prior: John V. Allcott. The former director of art at UNC, Allcott built the house for his family in 1951 in a forest south of UNC’s campus. It was a house filled with art and music. Allcott’s son recalled his father playing Joplin on a piano in the living room under a painting by Raoul Dufy, now on display in the Ackland Art Museum. Decades later, after Allcott’s death, his wife sold the home, and it fell into disrepair. Vines of kudzu and English ivy crept along the property, hiding much of it from view. When new residents moved in in 2019 and began cutting down the vines, they uncovered things they never expected to see buried in their yard. Pottery fragments. Porcelain plates. Sea shells. Painted statuettes. Most unusual was a complex system of stone walls that surrounded the home, likely built by Allcott himself. Together, these findings are a window into the past, a time capsule connecting the house to the man who used to live there decades before.
